Sunshine sensors Kipp & Zonen CSD 3 and others .
The CSD3 sunshine duration sensor measures the duration of sunshine. The duration of sunshine is defined by the WMO as the time during which direct solar radiation exceeds the level of 120 W/m2. It has no moving parts and uses 3 photodiodes with specially designed diffusers for analog calculation of when it is sunny. The output switches to high or low to indicate sunny or non-sunny conditions. The calculated value of direct irradiance is also available. The CSD3 is powered by a DC12V power supply and has built-in heaters to disperse rain, snow and frost. They are usually switched externally, but additional internal thermostatic control is available.
